History of Fort Myers, Florida

Fort Myers, Florida, was originally built during the Seminole Indian Wars. Inventor Thomas Edison discovered the quaint village while boating along the west coast of Florida and fell in love with the area. He built his home and laboratory, Seminole Lodge here and became Fort Myers most famous resident plus its loudest voice for both development and preservation.
Edison was instrumental in the acquisition and planting of hundreds of Royal Palms in Fort Myers. The nickname "City of Palms" is attributed to the stunning beauty of the Royal Palms still lining McGregor Avenue today. Eventually Edison’s friend and frequent guest Henry Ford built a home here also, and the two are considered Fort Myer's most influential and famous residents.
